Conversion rate optimization: find where visitors leave and fix it

Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is the work of getting more of the people who already visit your site to take the step you want: send an enquiry, book a call, start a trial or buy. SEO brings visitors; CRO works on the ones who arrive. We measure the funnel first, find where people drop out, rank the likely fixes, and then change the page, the form or the offer. We design and build websites ourselves, so the fix, whether a slow page or a broken form, ships in code instead of sitting in a report.

Redesigning on opinion instead of evidence

Most conversion advice is a list of tips: make the button bigger, add a testimonial, shorten the form. Some of it helps on some sites and hurts on others. Without a measured funnel you can't tell which step is leaking, so the changes are guesses and the next meeting is another argument about taste.

There is a second trap: running A/B tests on a site that doesn't have the traffic for them. A test on a few hundred visits a month rarely reaches a reliable answer. We tell you early which kind of site you have, and choose the method that fits.

What we deliver

  • Funnel measurement

GA4 events for the steps that matter, such as form views, form starts, submissions, phone taps and WhatsApp clicks, so each drop-off has a number next to it.

  • Behavior research

Session recordings and heatmaps with tools such as Microsoft Clarity or Hotjar, plus a read of search queries, form errors and the questions your sales team hears.

  • A ranked list of hypotheses

Each idea written as: we believe this change will help this group of visitors, because of this evidence. Ranked by likely impact, effort and confidence.

  • Changes and tests

Page, form and layout changes built in your codebase. A/B tests where traffic allows it, and before-and-after comparisons with clear caveats where it doesn't.

Funnel and tracking audit

Before we change anything, we check that the numbers can be trusted: GA4 events fire once and only once, forms report real submissions, calls and clicks are counted, and spam isn't inflating the total. Then we map the funnel from landing page to lead and show where the largest share of visitors leaves. For many sites this audit alone points to the first three fixes.

Landing page and form optimization

We rework the pages and forms that sit on the biggest leaks: the message above the fold, proof that is real and checkable, page speed on mobile, and fields that ask for more than the next step needs. Because we build the site, the change is made in the same pull request flow as any other code and previewed before it goes live.

Our web development work

Testing, where the traffic allows

If a page gets enough visits and conversions for a test to settle, we run a proper A/B test with one change, a written hypothesis and a planned stopping rule. If it doesn't, we say so and use qualitative research and larger, evidence-led changes instead, judged by before-and-after data we report with its limits.

How we build it

Every conversion rate optimization project runs through our delivery process. These are the steps that are specific to this work. Teal steps are thinking, graphite steps are building, and orange ones keep it running.

  1. Goals and tracking check

What counts as a conversion for your business, and whether the data is clean enough to trust.

  2. Funnel analysis

Where visitors drop out, split by device, source and landing page.

  3. Qualitative research

Session recordings, heatmaps, form analytics and a review of sales conversations.

  4. Hypotheses and priorities

A ranked backlog where every item cites its evidence.

  5. Build and launch changes

Shipped in code to a preview link first, then released with the date logged.

  6. Measure and decide

Compare against the baseline, keep what helped, undo what didn't, and plan the next round.

What you get

  • A tracking check and fixes for GA4 events, forms, calls and clicks
  • A funnel map showing where visitors leave, by device and source
  • A research summary from recordings, heatmaps and form data
  • A ranked backlog of hypotheses with the evidence behind each
  • Page, form and layout changes shipped in code
  • A test or before-and-after report that states its limits

Typical timelines

Typical timelines for conversion rate optimization work
ScopeRange
Tracking check and funnel analysis (planning range)1–2 weeks
Research and ranked backlog (planning range)1–2 weeks
Each test or change measured over (planning range)2–6 weeks, depending on traffic

Planning ranges, not quotes. Your scope sets the real timeline, which we confirm in writing after discovery. See how engagements are priced.

Tools we use

  • Hotjar
  • Looker Studio
  • Next.js and WordPress

See it in our work

  • Counselling practice

Before the local SEO work began, nothing on the site recorded booking clicks, phone taps or form submissions. Week one added conversion tracking for all three in GA4, so later changes could be judged against something.

Questions about conversion rate optimization

Do you guarantee a higher conversion rate?

No. A conversion rate depends on your market, your offer, your traffic and where the site starts. What we commit to is clean measurement, the research, the changes, and a report that includes the changes that did nothing.

How much traffic do I need for A/B testing?

Enough conversions on the page being tested for a difference to be told apart from chance, and that depends on your current rate and the size of the change. Generally, a site with only a few conversions a month can't be tested reliably. For those sites we use qualitative research and bigger changes, and we explain why.

What do you need from me?

Access to GA4 (or permission to set it up), Tag Manager if you have it, your CMS or repository, and a way to see what happens to leads afterwards, such as a CRM export. A conversation with whoever answers your enquiries helps a lot too.

What affects the cost of a CRO project?

The number of key pages and funnels, how much of the tracking has to be repaired first, how much build work the fixes need, and whether your traffic supports A/B tests or only before-and-after comparisons. We confirm scope after the tracking check, and the timelines on this page are planning ranges.

Can you make the changes on our site, or only recommend them?

We make them. We design and build with Next.js, WordPress and other stacks, so page, form and speed fixes go through your normal review and preview process. If your team prefers to implement them, we hand over a written spec instead.

Will session recordings and heatmaps break privacy rules?

They can if they're set up carelessly. We mask form fields and sensitive pages, add the tools to your cookie and consent set-up where your law requires it, and update your privacy notice wording for your team to review. Your own legal review decides what your jurisdiction needs.
